Our History

Walter Stuart Beebe, founder of The Church Bus News, was born on February 27, 1934, in Columbus, Ohio. Having never been in a fundamental church, he knew nothing about the Bible and being saved. When he was running a gas station on Route 41 in South Florida, a girl gave him a Gospel tract He went to the back of the station where he changed tires, read the tract, and received Christ as his Saviour. The Holy Spirit opened his eyes, and he immediately turned from the wild life of sin. He began preaching two weeks later and faithfully preached the Gospel of Jesus Christ for 51 years.

In 1955, he married his college sweetheart from Momence, Illinois - Winnie Prairie. They have five children: Stuart, Roxann, Jim, Melissa, and Lisa. They have been blessed with 11 grandchildren. Dr. Beebe received his Bachelor of Arts and Doctor of Divinity degrees from Bob Jones University and Doctor of Humanities from Hyles-Anderson College.

Best known as "Mr. Bus," Dr. Beebe directed some of the largest bus ministries in America. Some of these are Trinity Baptist Church, Jacksonville, Florida, under the leadership of Dr. Bob Gray; Thomas Road Baptist Church, Lynchburg, Virginia, under the leadership of Dr. Jerry Falwell; and First Baptist Church, Hammond, Indiana, under the leadership of the late Dr. Jack Hyles. Dr. Hyles once said, "Without a doubt, Dr. Beebe is responsible for more people being in Sunday school and church than any other man."

In the summer of 1971, Dr. Beebe decided to publish a magazine that would be specifically designed for the rapidly growing church bus ministries. The first issue of The Church Bus News was sent out from the First Baptist Church of Hammond, Indiana. He sponsored 31 National Bus Conventions. He had a ministry of helps, and every week pastors and Christian workers would call and ask for his advice. He provided scholarships so that many bus kids could attend Christian colleges.

After many illnesses, he passed away in an Atlanta hospital on October 2, 2002. He received his perfect body and the keys to a gold bus. His life's verse was, "For me to live is Christ, and to die is gain." Philippians 1:21.

On January 1st, 2003, Dr. Jeffery J. Fugate, pastor of Clays Mill Road Baptist Church, was named Editor in Chief of The Church Bus News.

Pastor Jeffery J. Fugate was born August 25, 1964, in Dayton, Ohio, and was saved at the age of five. When he was seven years old, the Fugate family returned to his parents' home place of Hazard, Kentucky, where his father, Sam Fugate, started the Bible Baptist Church of Hazard in 1972. Bro. Sam Fugate pastored this church until 1985 when he passed away with cancer at the age of 40. Bro. Jeff Fugate became the pastor of his father's church in Hazard at the age of 21. In 1987, he was married to Michelle Cornett of Hindman, Kentucky. The Fugates have four children.

Pastor Jeffery J. Fugate became pastor of Clays Mill Road Baptist Church in Lexington, Kentucky, in May of 1991. In his first service at the church, there were 18 people in attendance. The church has grown to an average attendance of over 1,300 with an average during the Spring Attendance Campaign of 2005 being nearly 1,600. In 1997, Bro. Fugate was honored with two honorary doctorate degrees: a Doctorate of Divinity from Oklahoma Baptist College and a Doctor of Humanities from Hyles-Anderson College. Bro. Fugate has a tremendous burden for the state of Kentucky. He has a goal to see 50 soul-winning churches planted throughout Kentucky, and has, to date, seen eight of those churches started.

To accommodate the growth of the church and. the additional ministries that have been added, Clays Mill Road Baptist Church has undergone many building projects through the years. In 1993, the church built a gymnasium that was also used for several years as the church auditorium. In 1998, construction was completed on a 1000-seat auditorium and office building. In 2001, the Anderson Educational Building was added to the church property, originally to house Commonwealth Baptist College, which was started in 1999, and now serves as home to the Clays Mill Road Christian Academy. In 2003, the church purchased and completely remodeled the facilities of an old motel in a beautiful location in the city of Lexington. This 23-acre campus is the home for Commonwealth Baptist College. Buildings and properties of the church are now valued at nearly $5 million.

Bro. Fugate grew up working in the bus ministry, learning from such men as Dr. Jack Hyles, Dr. Wally Beebe, Dr. Lee Roberson, and many, many others. Clays Mill Road Baptist Church runs 18 bus routes and averages over 500 each Sunday. In 2003, Dr. Fugate was asked to become Editor-in-Chief of The Church Bus News, a bi-monthly periodical sent to over 10,000 pastors and Sunday school & bus workers. Bro. Fugate is the author of three books, Can You See the Angels?, How To Be Close to Your Children, and Balance in the Christian Life.
